Futbol and Friends
November 18, 2007 on 4:33 pm | In Blog |So about a month ago I decided to possibly lose some weight to see 1. if I could and 2. rock climbing in the spring. I basically decided to simply eat less and start exercising a bit. I’m sad to say that the eating has not been too terribly drastic. Neither has the moving around. I am conscious of it though and that is a start. Doing push ups, sit ups, and walking faster are starts as well. But the greatest thing is soccer. So far I’ve played soccer three weeks in a row for an hour and a half on Saturdays. As some of you may know, I very much enjoy soccer and am pretty decent for someone who’s never played passed 5th grade. Every Sunday and Monday I’m a bit sore and I only wish I could play more often. Even worse, yesterday was possibly my last game because my Saturdays are now full of teaching middle schoolers how to do math and reading. So I guess I’ll have to wait until I’m back into judo for my regular exercise.
Yes, I started tutoring recently and so far, so good. I’m paid pretty well but I have two issues. I tutor in the homes of these students and all of them are about 20 minutes away. Also, I come up with my own lesson plans to that takes up time that I’m not paid for either. Right now I have four students and two of them are failing in every subject. Fortunately, one of them likes me and seems interested to learn in the way I’m teaching him. The other is incredibly apathetic and doesn’t really want to give me the time of day. I don’t quite know how to motivate him. He’s artistic so I’m going to try to get that worked in - it just sounds so cheesy most of the time. So I spend two 1.5 hour sessions with each of them for 10 weeks in a row. This has nothing to do with school, it’s just to get them back on grade level (or as high as possible).
I’ve also been hanging out a bit more than I’m used to with people here. I’ve now been to a few bars around, had some unique and tasty rootbeers, and really gotten to know people better. I’m not much of a “party” person because I just sit there and listen to everyone else talk. This was brought up a few times over the past couple of months and I’m trying to be quicker with my wit. It’s nice to know that people think I’m either thoughtful or funny - it just makes me feel wanted - and that’s a good thing. Now that I have a job finally, I feel like I can do this more than once a month. Like on Friday, I ate out and then went bowling for the first time in a while. It was wonderful. Speaking of friends, I’ve just now decided to go to Lexington to see people for a great Thanksgiving dinner. So, gotta go. I’ll be more theological next entry. Happy Thanksgiving!!
