Wine and Dreams
April 12, 2006 on 3:37 pm | In Blog |
It’s 3pm on Wed right now and I just woke up. Sleeping is something I love doing not simply for the physical benefits of warmth, comfort, peace, and rejuvenation; but also for the psychological ones of warmth, comfort, pe…well you get the idea. However, the last couple of nights I’ve been having a series of dreams that link together like a grand epic movie. The plot, albeit science fiction, I think would make for a very compelling and excellent motion picture. That was the main reason why I slept for 13 hours last night; I wanted to finish the story! But I didn’t. I was really getting into the characters and settings and then I just couldn’t sleep anymore. Perhaps it will finish tonight.
Last night was my first bartending night by alone in the bar. I couldn’t have picked a slower night to do it, which I suppose was good. I practiced my pours, read recipes, and cleaned. Oh did I clean! I probably spent over a third of my time there cleaning. But it was my own little self contained world. I’ll keep it up for a few more weeks and if I don’t like it then I’ll get out.
Some of you may be wondering, “Daniel, I really thought you were a good Christian boy and completely against alcohol. I thought you didn’t drink and having a job that focuses on selling alcohol would be some form of cognitive dissonance. What’s up?” Well, you’re right: I am a good Christian boy who DOESN’T DRINK AT ALL. Yet I serve alcohol all the time as a server so there’s really no difference. I don’t get people drunk nor is Macaroni Grill a place that people go to get drunk. I just wanted a change of pace and to advance a little in the Mac Grill world and bartending was the next step. I’ve still never had a drink (tongue tasted yes and it’s generally disgusting) and don’t plan on it any time soon. Alcohol has never been a temptation to me and I’m very grateful for that. If you have any other questions about my situation, please click on the Comments section and let me know.

It’s Cocktails and Dreams, not Wine and Dreams. Tom Cruise owned the bar, so I think he knows what it’s called.

On the whole wine / alcohol issue, it looks like the Word of God has your back… let’s see here:
May God give you of heaven’s dew and of earth’s richness— an abundance of grain and new wine.
-Genesis 27:28
I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain they give the LORD as the firstfruits of their harvest.
-Numbers 18:12
He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land—your grain, new wine and oil…
-Deuteronomy 7:13
Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do.
-Ecclesiastes 9:7
Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
-1 Timothy 5:23
But there are words of caution –
Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
-Proverbs 20:1
Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat
-Proverbs 23:20
>>> Comment on this, look at the last part of that verse, it’s coupled with drunkenness, but we Americans eat whatever the crap we want and don’t care but when someone gets drunk, they are hell-bound. Is there something wrong with that?
Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks,
-Isaiah 5:22
It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.
-Romans 14:21
>>> And perhaps the most famous:
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
-Ephesians 5:18
In America, it’s ok to over-eat, but if you get drunk you are a “sinner.” Why do you think that is? Is it the same thing? Overindulgence perhaps? Lack of self-control? What are your all’s thoughts?

sammy k…excellent questions to ponder. way to be a thinker

i wouldn’t say it is an American opinion that if you get drunk you are “***-bound” I’d say people with that opinion are in the minority in this country.
And comparing getting drunk to overeating is a bit like apple’s and oranges. I mean, both can be self abusive, but food is not an addictive, judgement impairing drug.

Cool! I forgot about the “bad-word” filter I programmed into the comment section, so now when we talk about h3ll, it gets filtered out! And also if I say **** or **** or ****, those get filtered out too! No way! *** **** is ************* and **** with ***** on the ***********. In case you haven’t noticed, I am just typing in stars….
Anyways, yes William, the “drunkards are h3ll-bound” people are certainly the minority, but they are all over the place it seems. I guess they are the ones who make such a stink in front of everyone and it makes a representation on everyone else associated with them in any way.
And on your quote, “but food is not an addictive, judgment impairing drug,” maybe it isn’t for you, but I know tons of people where food is a dependency and they are addicted to it hardcore. I agree that it may not be impairing mentally like alcohol does (at certain amounts,) but it certainly impairs your body. Especially when you are like me and want to try and climb the pink route but you can’t ’cause your too fat. So I certainly agree that they are different, or “apples and oranges” but they are still fruit (sin.)
I guess the point I am making is, should there be a distinction between sin? Are some sins worse than others? I have heard my whole life that “all sins are the same to God,” but show me some scripture to prove that. I mean, wasn’t it Jesus who said, “Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin”? (John 19:11) A greater sin? Perhaps he is speaking of blasphemy? What do you guys think?
Now, just to be clear, I am not saying that food and alcohol are sin in and of themselves, but it the indulgence in them is; as the verse says: “Do not join those who drink TOO much wine or GORGE themselves on meat.” (Proverbs 23:20) Can the moderate consumption of alcohol be a sin by itself? Sure! How? The same way meat sacrificed to idols was a sin for Paul to eat back in the day when people wrongly thought it was a sin to eat it: “It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.” (Romans 14:21) Paul was more concerned with the spiritual well-being of those around him than he was about eating meat sacrificed to idols with them. So if one drinks a beer in front of a fellow believer who believes it’s a sin, the one drinking the beer is in sin. Right? Or what do you guys think?
D-well, are you happy you have a subject that is hot to talk about in the comment section? Haha!

yes, but there are no chemical properties of food which distinctly cause you to become addicted to it. Yes, over eating is habit forming and can be very difficult to stop, but it is not a drug which by its very nature forces you to become dependent on it when consumed in excess.

Let me just say to everyone that last week’s happenings of bartending and then sleeping over 12 hours until 3 pm on Wed happened once again. I’m actually surprised that my body can still sleep that long.
