Panajachel
July 6, 2005 on 2:32 pm | In Blog | 9 CommentsI put up TWO new pages of GT pics!
Yesterday we all got back from Panajachel. This place is famous for its amazing terrain. Lake Atitlan is recessed deep in the mountains with a couple of volcanoes on one side. There are lagoons, waterfalls, and jungle cliffs. It truly is a magnificent place. Mark was able to get the International Missions Board to let us use their house for the night for free. We ate some good food, did some shopping, and got wet of course in the rain. In fact, Sam and I left the house at 7 pm to go get food. Melissa, Jennie, and Corey stayed at the house waiting for their delivery boys to get back. The entire evening it rained as we walked from store to store to restaurant to restaurant trying to find a place that had food we could take back to the house. Jennie really wanted soup and wheat bread and everyone else wanted chicken sandwiches or at least some peanut butter and chips.
Well after like 40 minutes of walking in the rain we found a place that had plastic plates and forks we could take with us. They were really nice and accommodated us in every way. It wasn’t too expensive either. Then we waited another half hour for all the food to be ready. While we sat there a couple walked in speaking half Dutch and half Spanish. It made us both realize how much we enjoy other languages and want to travel the world or at least Europe. Back-packing for about a month in Austria, Italy, etc sounds like a wonderful thing to do. When the food was listo (ready) we traversed the dark and dank with shoulders sore and my hand burning from the very hot soup. We get to the house only to find all three of them nearly asleep. What does a guy have to do!
Anyway it was an interesting night and we played a Rook game to 1000 pts. Melissa and I vs. the Germans (Sam and Corey). We call them Germans because Sam and Corey loved to speak in German accents making fun of German stereotypical things with occasional German words. “Das ist gut ja. (That is good, yes) Ve vill tach uvir da vorld on da wochenende (weekend). Our superiority makes it easy ja.” They also employed tactics of cheating with some very humorous table talk saying “With all this rain my grass still is not wet” or “I may not have very much urine, but it sure it potent.” But they did not take over the world this weekend at least. Charlotte came into town for the week since she is on vacation and her dad a ton of frequent flyer miles. We hadn’t seen here in a year and a half. We might be climbing an active volcano this week too! On the Fourth of July the only celebration we had in Panajachel was a free hotdog at a restaurant. Whoo hoo. Yes in the land of fireworks the size of your body (cuz nothing is illegal here) we did not blow up anything. Sad I know.
Keep praying for my preaching preparation. I haven’t been able to do nearly as much as I was hoping because of many different things. Also pray that everything will go smoothly when school starts up again on the 11th. Pray for the teachers and students as testing will begin for some of the classes very soon and others right after. THERE ARE ONLY TWO MORE WEEKS FOR ME HERE!
